A little update on my 25 list...

I finished The Book Thief today and it was very enjoyable. I grabbed a book at the library because nursing takes FOREVER. All of those people who love nursing, good for you. I hate it. I'm doing it because it's a FREE way to feed E and it's good for her. Anyway, with me spending at LEAST 5 hours a day feeding her and trapped on the couch, I might as well do something enjoyable while I'm there, right? That's probably how my book list is going to be completed. The Book Thief is a WWII book, which I usually hate and avoid, but I didn't know it was a WWII book, and it had me hooked by the time I thought about not reading it, so I finished it and it was wonderful. I highly recommend it. There are, of course, some sad parts (it is about the Holocaust, after all), but the majority of the book is not sad and from the point of view of death. I highly recommend it--you won't be disappointed.

I made petits fours for a relief society activity June 21st. They were fun but not tasty at all; just super sweet. If I had had a way to keep the frosting warm they would have been prettier and taken less time, but I didn't, so they weren't. You can see my post on it here.

I'm on the list at the library to get The Help, so I'll have an update when I finish that.

I'm going to try fondant when my family comes to visit Aug 30 - Sept 13.

I haven't registered for it yet, but I'm thinking of doing the Soda Screamer on October 8th, so that'll fulfill the run a race goal.

Now that E's born, I've taken pictures of everyone's profiles, so I'll hopefully have a silhouette something created. I'm thinking it might just be a print.

The SAT word of today is "discursive" meaning rambling.

I've been doing a good job on writing in their journals. The day before E was supposed to come I had a meltdown most of the day about how it was P & my last day alone together, and wrote LOTS in his journal. I'm glad I have them, because I'm really enjoying writing to them.

I've been taking a picture of E every day, but she does NOT want to be set on a white, hard surface in order for me to get the kind of picture I want...oh well. I've been trying to take a picture of P every day too, but sometimes he just straight up refuses, so sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

I've been pretty good about reading the Sunday School lesson every week. I enjoy being prepared.

I'm going to get Katie Evan's The Key to taking Pictures like a Professional Photographer so I can learn how to take better pictures.

I think that's all. I've also edited my book list to compensate for disappointingly scandalous books, and added one that I wasn't planning on reading but did for a book club and very much enjoyed (also, surprisingly enough, about WWII).

Blessing Pictures

We blessed Emma Gray this last Sunday and it was a wonderful blessing! She was blessed with the Gift of Love--isn't that a wonderful gift to have? I think it's so neat. We had cupcakes and ice cream afterwards. I should have made 10,000 chocolate ones because they were gone in 5 seconds and everyone wanted more. They were divine if I do say so myself. I also had mason jars filled with ice water. I made Emma's dress (from ideas from Gap and JCrew), and it turned out so well! It had flannel against her skin and tulle on the outside. I also made the bunting with her name that was above the food table that will go in her room. I'm really happy with how it turned out. P loved all the treats and entertained the girls with his burping on cue...great. My grandparents from Provo came up, and J's parents and uncle were here to also be a part of the blessing. We're thankful to everyone who participated. (That first picture is our bishop).

Swimming

We went to Lava today with some friends. It was AWESOME. I can't actually swim yet, but everyone else got in and it was soooo fun! P loved going down the kiddy slide, and jumping into the arms of Seth, our friend. I didn't make E wear clothes at the pool and she loved every second of it. P was a swaddle kind of kid and he could have spent every second curled up in a ball. E spends a lot of time with her legs straight and since it was so hot she stretched her arms out too. It's funny how they're different. He wasn't a pacifier kid and she DEFINITELY is. He didn't want to have anything to do with nursing and she loves it. It's so fun getting to know her. I think she and P look exactly the same (you can see pictures of P at this same age here). She's a little darker in her hair and skin, and she's a little hairier than he was (it's super cute now, but will be a bummer later in life).

For whatever reason, I've been singing this song at least a few times a day since E was born. It's so pretty, and I want it to go in her (& P's) room. So, I made it into subway art! I already have a frame that I'm looking forward to putting it into. If you'd like it just email me and I'll send the file to you.

P talked a lot about the different things he wanted to do with E when she got here, and one of them was watch movies with her. Now she can.

July 21, 2011, at 12:55 in the afternoon Emma Gray was born. She weighed 6lb 14oz and was 20 inches long. She's a superstar. We don't have super great pictures of her yet, but we'll put more and more up. P's been pretty good happy about the whole thing, so far. We'll see how it goes. She has really pretty skin and dark hair. Labor was a dream, because I had an epidural and everything worked the way it was supposed to. I pushed 3 times and she was out. It was fantastic.

Baby Update: E still hasn't shown up, yet. She's 4 days overdue, today, but Thursday is my next induction date. If the pitocin still doesn't work, I'll have to have a c-section, which is not something I ever wanted, but we'll just see what happens! I'll keep you all updated!

We went to Malad (like always), for the 4th of July and had a blast (of course)! P didn't really get the concept of getting the candy off the ground in the middle of the road, so he cried a little because of us all yelling at him to go get the candy. It was cute. He then started out just getting the candy one by one and by the end of the parade he was stealing candy from other kids...We had a great day, and P loved the fireworks at the end of the day. Grandma Bodily bought P a matching shirt (matching with her) and they wore jeans & red converse shoes for their 4th of July outfits.

P discovered one day he could drink chocolate milk with no milk...I've never seen a kid so in heaven. Then when I took his cup full of chocolate syrup away, he just licked the remaining chocolate off the table. It's been a fight ever since to make him put milk in his chocolate milk.

Also, I'm now pretty antsy for E to get here...my friend Linda says E wants to grow out her hair before she shows up so she looks less like an old man and more like a little girl. I might work on trying to check off some stuff on my 25 things list today to pass the time...

Home from Hospital--Emma's Still Inside

We went into the hospital this morning, took the pill, walked around for a few hours, got measured (had increased to 1 1/2 centimeters...), started the pitocin, and 2 hours later was no different. My body seems to have a hard time with medication--sleeping medicine doesn't do anything, and it seems like pitocin doesn't either. So, they sent me home and we'll have to wait until E shows up on her own. I was disappointed...but it'll be fine. She'll get here when she gets here. It'll give me some time to make some ruffle bums for her.

Thanks everyone who sent encouraging texts, etc. I really appreciate every bit of it, and I'll keep you updated!

Oceans Eleven

With P, I used the Andy Warhol quote for waiting for P to come, but as I was editing E's picture, all I could hear was the bril line from Oceans Eleven with the Mormon twins at their track where the one guy says to the other "Waiting, Sweetheart, just waiting..." The "sweetheart" isn't actually a name of affection in this instance, and while I am SO excited for her to get here, I feel the same facetious tone , so if you don't know the line from the movie, read the line with some sass. The first image is 2 days before P showed up, and we'll see how long it takes before E shows...

Baby Update

Went to the dr's today--I'm not any more dilated than I was before (bummer), and someone's getting surgery done when I'm supposed to be induced, so my induction date has been changed from July 6th to July 7th. I'll go in at 6am, take some pill to ready my body, walk around for 3 hours, and then they'll give me pitocin to get going. All of that is if she doesn't come before.

A little ride...turned into a big ride

We went on a 4-wheeler ride that was only supposed to last an hour or so and it ended up taking 4 hours because we got SUPER lost! We went off-roading (not really on purpose), it got dark (it was then 10:30 at night), and we couldn't find our way out and got stuck inside a fence right next to the road to our house, so we walked 1.2 miles home. I had contractions the last hour of the riding part and the whole walking part...but I knew they'd stop as soon as we'd get home, and they did. It rained and hailed a little, but P was a great sport about the whole thing! It was certainly a fun adventure! Anyway, I got lots of good pictures on our ride! (some of them are blurry but I like them, anyway) You can see that there were sunny and rainy parts of the ride...the sun peaked out of the clouds on and off the whole night.

Drive In Movie

We are pros at drive-in movies. I love them so flippin much, and I'm so glad J's a genius so figures out how to make it as comfy as possible... I REALLY wanted to go to the drive-in last summer when J's whole family was here, but lots of stuff happened and the drive-in wasn't one of them...SO, when we saw Rio was showing, we KNEW we had to go.

Here is what we brought:
P's old crib mattress
3 couch cushions
Black Panther (J's mexican blanket)
The Big Blanket (I don't know why J calls it that, but he does...it's his denim blanket I made for him for Father's Day last year)
P's quilt (again, don't know why we call it that because I didn't make it for P...I made it for me, but somehow he gets to sleep with it every night)
All of the bed pillows in the house
Extra socks just in case
2 liter of soda
Water bottles full of ice
Candy

At the drive-in we bought their food (but it wasn't that great, so we won't do it again), set up the mattress behind us in the back of the subaru leaning up against the chairs (that were leaned up as far as they would go), put the couch cushions under us, put a blanket down, and put 2 of the other blankets on top of us. We stayed warm, and enjoyed the food and movie! P got kinda antsy 20 minutes to the end and started to climb around, but other than that he watched the whole thing! It was a blast!

You Look Great! (NOPE)

P chooses his clothes, often. That's fine--most of the time he looks great. Most of his shirts are blue, and you can't really go wrong with jeans or khakis...sometimes I wish he'd wear different shoes, but most of the time it's ok. Not today--today was a disaster. Thanks to J, he only walked around the house and sat in the car in this outfit, but there was NOTHING I could do to persuade him to change his clothes. My only word for what he looked like (other than ridiculous) was a gigolo...and that really doesn't even apply. He just HAD to wear his cowboy boots (usually soooo cute...today, not so much), and I got a pendant for my necklace with E's name on it, and he not only wanted her pendant by HIS, but he wanted to wear it too! (yay for happy about her coming....not so yay about how he looked...). He had his Buzz shirt (one of 3) and royal blue gym shorts on, so the combination was sooo ugly! I didn't take a picture of it, so I recreated it on paint. Enjoy.

Boise

We went & visited some friends from college in Boise and had a BLAST. Love them. We went to the temple grounds and let the kids play (on the grass and in the fountain), went swimming (divine...), and just played lots and lots! Tori (the little girl) had a power wheels (jealous), and P had a GREAT time with it! He figured out how to go forwards & backwards and just drove around and around (as you can see in the video). It was so fun to hang out with them and for P to have a friend. So glad we went!

P.S. If you enjoyed that video, please appreciate that it took so flippin long to load that I almost smacked J in the face for his horrible snoring, which I usually make him roll over for, but couldn't because then he'd tell me to get off the computer but I couldn't because the video was STILL LOADING...grrrrrrrrrr.......

Emma Update

I had a dr's appointment yesterday and I'll have an appointment every Wednesday from now until she shows up. I got to have an ultrasound because I hadn't gained any weight and wasn't measuring any bigger from last month (which even though I've seen NO emotion this whole 8 months from my dr he got freaked out about, which freaked me out too), in which we found out that she is just fine! A good healthy size--she's exactly 6 pounds, and I thought she was supposed to gain a pound a week (which made me want to die), but it's closer to a half a pound a week (an ounce a day is more exact), so that's a lot better. We tried to have her gender checked again but she was being modest (actually, everything's just so squished together), so J still thinks we're having a boy...whatever. What we did learn though is that her legs are long (measuring 36 1/2 weeks instead of 36), her head is little (measuring 35 weeks [just like P was...]), her belly's right on what it should be, and there's still a good amount of amniotic fluid inside. We got to see her face, but the picture is ridiculous in that I can't almost tell it's a person. If she does look like her picture though, she has J's straight nose (which J HATES), so she might look just like J ("poor kid" -J). We'll see. I don't have the scanner hooked up, so I can't post the picture, but maybe (yeah right...)

I haven't started being checked to see how dilated I am (which I was really hoping...), but we've scheduled her induction for 7am on Wednesday, July 6th, but I'm kinda thinking she might be a 4th of July baby--let's be honest, though...I really have no idea.

I took a tour of the hospital last week and asked if they had a jacuzzi I could be in during labor (not when she comes out, just during contractions--it was a dream during P), and they said no, but since I requested it they got a portable tub. What service!

That's the update!

P.S. That picture was taken yesterday (in front of the stove--super classy, right?), and I'm wearing a shirt I got in Boise last week for $7 at Anthro.

Update on the My 25 Things, I don't really know what book to delete from my list, but I've added Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild to my list of books. I saw it at the library (was very surprised how thick it was..I always thought the "shoe books" were picture books...) (also, was waiting for Codex to come in through interlibrary loan) and jumped at it...but sometimes those books are soooo boring (sometimes I feel that way about reading Little Women). I opened it up, and it had the same font as Betsy Tacy & Tib which books I aDORE, so I snatched it up and it has been a wonderful read! Sometimes I feel like some more modern books have to have a "shock" factor in it in order for people to think it's interesting but that is just not my style! This book is whimsical & romantic (not in a boy-girl sort of way, but the idealized form of reality sort of way [and who doesn't want to live in that sort of world]), and although I'm not done it has been thoroughly enjoyable! Codex (by Lev Grossman) came in today, so that'll be up next! p.s. 4 more school days left!

I've been pretty bad at keeping up with this the last week or so. School's kicking my trash, but I just finished writing up the review packet for our last chapter test, and I'm avoiding doing the review packet for the final (which I also need to do tonight), so you get some more details (there's no way I'm going to be able to show you all I wanted to this month...I didn't know it was the 24th already!).

I might just make these NOW. We have a gynormous window that I don't want to buy a window dressing for because we probably won't have another house with a window this big in it, but I could definitely get some fabric, some shower curtain rings, and make this and still have it look wonderful. This is my cousin. I know she's Asian--calm down. My grandma's sister moved to Hawaii and now we have Asian cousins! She is getting more and more famous every day because of her super rad blog, and she was on KSL just the other day! There was a Shabby Apple contest that she won by making this dress that they are making in the fall!

We went to the park. The 3rd pic is the same face as when you're kissing/tickling him and he just can't help but laugh. It's my fave. I tell him 15,000 times a day how gorgeous he is. I hope he never forgets. It makes me feel like this and laughing at the same time.

They both got haircuts for Easter. I just aDORE them.

The nerd in me loves that his seat is perfectly horizontal to the ground. Also, we're starting Trig(onometry) in my math class Monday--it's my fave. They won't even know what hit them. I might be bringing cupcakes just to celebrate.

How Will I Dress Her?

I don't know why it's a big deal to me. When P showed up and it came to dressing him, I took everything anyone would give us and put it on him. E is not going to be the same. I keep seeing these adorable 4 year olds, and I know how I'll dress her when that time comes, but when she still has behind-the-knee-fat-rolls, I draw a _________.

Here are some things I've accepted that I love and that are acceptable looks for her. I would aDORE any suggestions. These examples are just to give you the overall feeling...I guess lots of ruffles, lace, bright colors, & prints. Let's get as girly as we can!

If you ever wished you could tie balloons to your house to finally explore the wilds of South America like you've always wanted without having to pack one suitcase, you're in luck... it is possible. Well, sort of.

All you need is a team of scientists, engineers, world-class balloon pilots, a 16X16 ft house, 300 balloons that fill up to 8 ft tall when inflated, and the National Geographic Channel and you're all set! Easy as pie.

Setting a new world record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted, the entire aircraft from top to bottom was a whopping 10-stories high, made it to an alititude of 10,000 feet, and flew for about an hour. You can catch the full story when the new series "How Hard Can it Be?" premieres later this fall on the National Geographic Channel.

We’ve been on a major smoothie kick and have been blending and drinking one for breakfast every morning. I usually do not choose to drink my calories (who would rather have a can of soda over a cookie?) but smoothies are the exception. I find that they’re a good way to get several servings of fruits and sometimes veggies. The usual is about a cup of frozen strawberries (I buy them fresh, when they’re on sale and stick them in the freezer), half a banana, 1/2 cup blueberries, a handful of spinach (you can’t taste it but it adds nutrients), 1/2 cup plain yogurt (less sugar), 1 cup milk. Sometimes I add in a little dab of orange juice concentrate for a zing.
The reason for this post? I’m wondering if you have any smart suggestions for different combos I can try or smart additions. Plus I’m loving the color combo inspiration. Shoot, am I getting boring?

Ingredients

5 oranges

2 lemons

3 limes

1 grapefruit

2 tbsp. sugar substitute (I use Truvia. You can use regular sugar as well)

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups crushed ice

Directions

Peel all of the fruit. I know, I know, it's kind of a lot of prep work but I think it's worth it. I like things pulpy, so it definitely made the difference for me.

Add all the fruit to your blender.

Blend away until smooth (or you can leave it a little pulpy like I do). Once the fruit is blended, add the sugar, vanilla, and ice. Blend again. Serve, and enjoy.

P & I got in a car accident on Wednesday. The slush got us, and we flipped over, but we were both wearing our seat belts, so we are fine. It was radical to be upside down, and I process the whole thing in my mind a couple times a day. The driver's side window broke and snow/dirt was dug inside the car, which I fell onto after I took my seatbelt off. I didn't even know it until last night when I felt pieces of dirt in my scalp, even though I had taken a shower. We're thankful for good insurance, seat belts, and that we're an eternal family just in case that middle one let us down. We bought another car a month or so ago that was mostly just backup, but that's exactly what we need, so we aren't out in the cold without a car. Just wanted people to see our latest "adventure".

Color Makes the Picture

I've been trying to see different ways to change pictures instead of just "picnik-ing" them, and sometimes it's adding some pink, or blue, or a ton of one color. Bleached Out T's

Hello, Friends! Ralph finished up his sibling Christmas gifts this weekend. He created great-looking bleached out tees, each one unique and representing something he thought each individual sibling would love. They turned out super cool. And I’ve got the images and techniques ready to share. Find the full DIY below.

For Betty, Ralph chose a simplified flower. Cute!

This one’s for Maude. In case you’re wondering, orange Camp Halfblood t-shirts are a major part of the Percy Jackson book series. : ) Ralph made a second one for Maude’s best friend. Maude is going to go nuts over these.

Olive’s favorite color is green and her favorite fruit is a pear.

Ralph made a t-shirt for himself too. He is really into skate brands at the moment, so he recreated the Electric logo.

For Oscar, Ralph used duct tape. Ralph’s happiest about how this one turned out.

J is for June, of course.

1) Start by gathering your materials. You’ll need a 100% cotton t-shirt in a bright or dark color (you can use a pastel, but the contrast from the bleach won’t be as intense), bleach, rags and something to block the bleach. We used vinyl cutouts and duct tape as blockers.

2) Spread out the t-shirt, then put a layer of rags or an old towel between the front and back — so the bleach doesn’t bleed through to the back of the shirt.

3) Apply the design you want on your t-shirt. For most of our designs, we used sticky-back vinyl that was cut into shapes and letters using a Silhouette machine. For Oscar’s tee, Ralph put strips of duct tape across the shirt in a diagonal pattern. If you don’t have a Silhouette machine, you could still buy a sheet or roll of sticky-back vinyl and cut out the shapes you want by hand.

4) Next, pour some bleach into a container and dip an old rag into the bleach. Press the rag on to and around the vinyl or tape. When the shirt is as bleached as you’d like it to be, life the front of the shirt, slip out the rags and immediately rinse the shirt in water to stop the bleaching process.

5) Dry the shirt in the dryer and you’re ready to wrap it up. Yay! (Find a few more helpful tips at the bottom.)

Some helpful tips:

- If the bleach doesn’t seem to be working, there is probably sizing on the t-shirt fabric. Just wash and dry the shirt and try again. This happened to me twice and washing the shirt did the trick.

- Wider pieces of vinyl seemed to work better than thin pieces. For example, the lettering on the Camp Halfblood t-shirt was super thin and the bleach crept behind the letters. We used an orange fabric marker to correct any over-bleaching. The camp tee was the only design where this happened.

- For the pear we used a sponge brush instead of the rag. The rag makes for cleaner edges around the design. The brush made fuzzy edges. Both can be cool depending on what you’re looking for.

- You’ll probably get a few random dots of bleach on the shirt in places you weren’t planning. Don’t stress. It will look good anyway. : )
